Maintaining speed and innovation whilst scaling a business isn’t easy. At loveholidays this was especially challenging as our speed and innovation helped win us the award for the fastest growing business in the UK in 2019.
We’ve previously wrote about how we utilise runatlantis.io hosted in GKE, paired with Github, to manage the infrastructure from our various Terraform repositories here at loveholidays. If you haven’t seen this and want to know more about our set up, along with how we integrated Atlantis with Conftest, have a read here.
The period between the 26th of December and early February is one of increased holiday trading activity in the UK. At loveholidays we affectionately refer to it as Peaks. During Peaks, loveholidays.com’s throughput exceeds more than 10 times the average.
Like most kids his age, my son Isaac loves Lego. It’s a great product (if not a little pricey). Once, in a misguided attempt to save money, I bought him some fake Lego Star Wars characters thinking he wouldn’t notice the difference. They were similar in shape, design, and colour to the real deal but as time went on, they just sat collecting dust. When asked about it he explained, “It’s not real Lego”. Something about those figures didn’t feel right to him but he couldn’t express exactly what.
Here at loveholidays we are heavily dependant on Terraform. All of our Google Cloud infrastructure is managed using Terraform, along with a number of non-GCP services as well.
A friend once told me, “The problem with agile is that it needs a story”. As head of investor relations she was lamenting the fact that, even with great business results, all the work that we had done to improve the company had gone unnoticed. Our incremental approach made it difficult to follow along with the improvements made over time as, by design, there were no ‘Big Bang’ moments where something new was revealed. Instead, things just got consistently better and that was a bit… well… boring.
