Background

The Manchester Quantum Systems (ManQS) Theory Group is based in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Manchester. The group pursues a broad research programme spanning the fundamentals and applications of quantum information theory, quantum stochastic processes, and quantum thermodynamics.

This position is funded by a Leverhulme Trust Research Grant entitled “Geometry of Higher-Order Quantum Operations and Implications for Causality.” The project lies at the intersection of quantum foundations, information geometry, and random matrix theory. It seeks to address fundamental questions concerning the structure of higher-order quantum operations — particularly quantum combs / process tensors and processes that lack a definite causal order.

Overall, Purpose of the Role

The Research Associate will contribute to the development of mathematical and computational tools for characterising the geometric properties of higher-order quantum operations. This includes constructing methods to sample random higher-order quantum operations using techniques from random matrix theory, and analysing the typicality of causal indefiniteness, as well as violations of causal inequalities.

The postholder will work closely with the project investigators, Philip Taranto and Harry Miller, and will play a central role in advancing the project’s theoretical programme.
