BNY is launching a Forward Deployed Engineering (FDE) capability to accelerate AI‑first, production‑grade solutions where the “hard part” is last‑mile adoption. As our founding FDE Lead, you will both build the function (team, frameworks, training, engagement model) and personally drive lighthouse deliveries as a principal FDE on top‑priority opportunities. This role is located in New York City.

What you will lead and do

  • Stand up and lead the FDE function
    • Team: Recruit, coach, and grow a high-bar, hands-on FDE team; define the role mix and mentoring model.
    • Frameworks & processes: Establish intake, scoping, discovery-to-prod standards, and crisp handoff criteria; codify security/compliance guardrails, observability baselines, and day‑2 ownership expectations.
    • Training & enablement: Launch an “FDE Academy” (workshops, labs, shadowing program) to cross-train engineers; publish reusable templates and validated patterns for rapid deployments.
    • Measurement: Define and track success metrics—time-to-value, % engagements producing reusable assets, platform adoption lift, and reductions in manual work for business partners.

  • Execute as a principal FDE on lighthouse builds
    • Discovery to deployment: Embed with stakeholders to clarify problems and constraints, rapidly prototype, then harden solutions into secure, observable, scalable deployments.
    • Reuse-first delivery: Configure and extend existing platforms (data, AI, APIs) with client-specific logic; contribute modules, templates, and evaluation harnesses back to internal repositories.
    • Platform feedback loop: Translate field learnings into product backlog inputs and reference architectures that raise the baseline for future builds.

Ways of working (FDE model)

  • Embedded, time‑boxed engagements with clear entry/exit criteria and transition plans.
  • Alongside platform/product teams (not a bespoke app factory); default-to-reuse, standardization, and secure-by-default patterns.
  • Measured on time‑to‑value and creation of reusable assets—not only throughput.
     

To be successful in this role, we’re seeking the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field (standard minimum requirement).
  • 15+ years of total experience with 10+ years in software engineering; ideally 2+ years in client-facing delivery (FDE/FDSE, solutions/growth engineering, or blended Product/Engineering roles).
  • Software engineering: Strong hands-on coding experience (Java primary; TypeScript/JavaScript; Python as needed), building robust backend services and APIs with secure-by-default patterns.
  • Systems thinking & architecture: End-to-end design across data, services, and infrastructure; pragmatic trade-offs; reliability, observability, and performance at scale.
  • Product discovery & stakeholder engagement: Operate in ambiguity, lead discovery with business sponsors, clarify scope and success metrics, communicate clearly across technical/non-technical audiences.
  • Reuse & standardization: Default to reusable components, templates, and reference architectures; integrate with shared platforms; avoid bespoke one-offs and ensure clean handoffs to owners.

The base salary for this position is expected to be between $136,500 and $280,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base salary if hired will be determined on an individualized basis, including as to experience and market location, and is only part of the BNY total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, discretionary bonuses, short and long-term incentive packages, and Company-sponsored benefit programs. 


This position is at-will and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, change in geographic location, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
