Job Introduction

The BBC’s Technical Operations (TechOps) team is responsible for building and managing the IT infrastructure that supports our broadcast and enterprise systems. This includes both virtual and physical platforms hosted in BBC and external data centres across London, Salford, and other global locations.


As a Senior Systems Engineer, you’ll play a key role in delivering and maintaining these platforms. You’ll work across the full lifecycle—from planning and design to implementation, testing, and support. You’ll also help improve how we work by introducing new tools, automating processes, and sharing your expertise with the team.

 

This role is based at our White City office in London, with a flexible mix of home working, office time, and occasional visits to data centres. Some out-of-hours work is expected.

Main Responsibilities

maintenance for the BBC Technical Operations (TechOps), hosting Infrastructure and Platform Engineering Team’s virtual and physical IT infrastructure platforms. Your responsibilities will focus on collaborating with engineering teams in the planning, design, development, integration, commissioning, and testing, and operation of infrastructure systems, ensuring improvements in the operating environment.

 

•    Design, build, and support virtual and physical infrastructure systems
•    Collaborate with engineers, architects, and project teams to deliver secure, scalable solutions
•    Integrate systems with monitoring and support tools to ensure reliability and performance
•    Automate operational tasks using scripting tools like PowerShell, Bash, and Python
•    Write and maintain technical documentation and test plans
•    Support system commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance
•    Stay up to date with new technologies and industry trends
•    Communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical colleagues
•    Mentor team members and contribute to knowledge sharing

Infrastructure & Hardware
•    Experience with HPE ProLiant and Supermicro servers
•    Familiarity with HPE Synergy systems and switch fabric integration
•    Knowledge of HPE SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure

 

Storage & Virtualisation
•    Understanding of storage systems: iSCSI, Fibre Channel SANs, NFS, and arrays like HPE Nimble, Alletra, Tintri, and 3Par
•    Experience with VMware vSphere 7/8, ESXi, vCenter, NSX-T, vSAN, and VMware Aria Suite
•    Proficiency in VMware Identity Manager and NSX-T Distributed Firewall

 

Cloud & Backup
•    Experience managing Kubernetes clusters
•    Knowledge of backup and disaster recovery tools like Veeam, HPE StoreOnce, AWS S3, and Cohesity

 

Operating Systems & Networking
•    Admin experience with Windows Server, Ubuntu, and RHEL Linux
•    Familiarity with Active Directory and DNS
•    Experience with network virtualisation and security policy configuration

 

Automation & DevOps
•    Scripting skills in PowerShell, Bash, or Python
•    Experience with GitHub, Subversion, and Octopus Deploy
•    Use of Ansible, Terraform, and GitOps for infrastructure automation

 

IT Security & Compliance
•    Strong understanding of IT security principles. Experience implementing security best practices in server environments and adhering to compliance standards.


Soft Skills
•    Strong written and verbal communication.
•    Ability to explain technical concepts to different audiences.
•    A collaborative approach to problem-solving and solution design.
