The Waters Informatics department is looking for an energetic and creative computational scientist that will specialize in creating scientific mechanistic and machine learning models. This role will exist at the interface of research and development, with the individual developing, experimenting and validating mechanistic and machine learning models in the Global Research department, and also supporting the integration of these models in AWS cloud products for release as part of the Informatics department. The individual will bring to bear concepts in mathematics, chemistry and physics, as well as machine learning approaches, to contribute to the next generation of innovations in intelligent instrumentation.

The Waters Global Research team performs early, cutting-edge research on novel chromatography and mass spectrometry systems that have a direct impact on laboratory testing, drug discovery and development and food safety. We are committed to understanding customer needs and pivoting these insights into new and exciting technologies to address those needs. The role of this computational scientist will be to develop data processing algorithms and models, assist with the development of data pipelines for specialty instrument data, and experiment with new data and algorithmic features to maximize the efficiency and efficacy of the results from our analytical instrumentation.

Responsibilities

  • Explore various scientific, statistical and machine learning approaches, explore data features, generate metrics, and evaluate results associated with collection and analysis of chromatographic and mass spectrometric data
  • Assist subject matter experts (SMEs) in model evaluation and stakeholder presentations
  • Use object-oriented programming and functional programming best practices to maintain codebases in python and C#, and write unit tests
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, patent applications, and transferable protocols
  • Contribute to the construction and maintenance of the AWS data pipeline
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant scientific literature

Qualifications

  • 5 or more years of practical experience in mechanistic modeling and machine learning
  • S. or PhD in computer science, data science, or scientific field with a computational focus
  • Experience in model development using Python for machine learning, statistical, and mechanistic models
  • Robust object-oriented and/or functional programming skills in languages including C#, and Python. C++ desirable.
  • Comfortable with Git version control, and either BASH or command prompt
  • Candidate must be in the milford area
  • Able to communicate results using meaningful metrics and visualizations to managers and stakeholders and receive feedback.
  • Proficiency with AWS Lambda, S3, EC2, or Redshift desirable
