The bulk of the data engineer’s work would be in building, managing and optimizing data pipelines and then moving these data pipelines effectively into production for key data and analytics consumers (like business/data analysts, data scientists or any persona that needs curated data for operational and analytical data use cases.
Data engineers also need to guarantee compliance with data governance and data security requirements while creating, improving and operationalizing these integrated and reusable data pipelines. This would enable faster data access, integrated data reuse and vastly improved time-to-solution for CarMax’s operational and analytical initiatives
 

  • What you will do – Essential Responsibilities

    • Introduced to the context in which a task fits, can design and complete medium sized data task independently.

    • Performs intelligent data profiling and implement technical designs.

    • Drive root cause analysis of production issues.

    • Assists in integrating diverse datasets and understanding data consumption patterns.

    • The data engineer will also need to assist with renovating the data management infrastructure to drive automation in data integration and management.

    • Ensures that the data consumers use the data provisioned to them responsibly through data governance and compliance initiatives.

Purpose of the role

The newly hired data engineer will be the key contributor in organizing siloed data from across the enterprise into a comprehensive data set.  This dataset will either be used in operational use cases to help enhance our customer experience and operational excellence and to fuel analytical and data science capabilities.  

Qualifications and Requirements

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Decision Science, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field, or equivalent alternative education, skills, and/or practical experience is required.

  • 2-5 years of work experience required in data management or software development required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Database/Schema Design.

  • Experience in Azure Cloud technologies and Snowflake.

  • Moderate experience with ETL/ELT, CDC.

  • Basic understanding of streaming data ingestion.

  • Basic understanding of Big Data concepts.

  • Moderate experience with advanced analytics tools languages such as [R, Python, Java, C++, Scala, others].

  • Moderate experience with popular database programming languages including [SQL, PL/SQL, others].

  • Moderate experience with data analysis and quality controls.

  • Moderate experience working with popular data discovery, analytics and BI software tools like [Tableau, Qlik, PowerBI and others].

Work Location and Arrangement: This role will be based out of one of the following locations and have a Hybrid work arrangement:

  • Richmond, VA Technology Innovation Center

  • Dallas, TX Technology Hub

Work Authorization:  Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.
