About the role:
InsurX is reinventing how complex commercial insurance is traded. We’ve grown from
$20m to $70m GWP in two years and are targeting $200m this year. To support that
scale, we’re hiring a Head of Engineering to lead the next evolution of our platform.
This is a chance to build powerful systems that automate complexity, drive real
outcomes, and scale into the billions. You’ll set the technical direction, lead the
evolution of our platform, and grow a lean, impact-driven team in one of the most
valuable and under-innovated markets in the world.
You’ll be responsible for:
• Setting the technical direction of our platform, driving architectural decisions
that enable performance, scalability, and reliability as we scale to $1bn+ in
traded gross market value.
• Leading and growing the engineering team while embedding a culture of
autonomy, ownership, and accountability. Building a team that thrives in a fast-
paced, cross-functional environment, values clean, observable, and testable
code, and protects time for foundational work such as refactoring and reducing
technical debt.
• Staying close to the code, reviewing architecture and design, and contributing
where needed: especially in critical or high-leverage areas.
• Establishing engineering excellence, with clear principles around reliability,
security, observability, cloud infrastructure and cost-ePectiveness.

About You
• You’re an experienced engineering leader who has successfully scaled software
teams and systems in a startup or high-growth scale up in a regulated
environment where trust, data integrity and uptime aren’t optional, they are
contractual.
• You’ve spent 3+ years in Engineering Management roles (managing multiple
teams or a growing team), and 3+ years as a hands-on Tech Lead, ideally in a
venture-backed Series A+ company.
• You have experience hiring, mentoring, and developing engineers, as well as
shaping an inclusive and high-trust culture.
• You’re comfortable making and guiding architectural decisions and believe in
balancing technical rigour with pragmatic delivery.
• You still enjoy writing code when it matters. You’re not here to manage process,
you’re here to build something that lasts.
• You’ve built or rebuilt platforms before and know the diPerence between scaling
a prototype and scaling a product.
• You love working cross-functionally but want to be the one holding the technical
standard, not just translating specs.
• You have deep experience with at least one major programming language
(Python, C#, Java, etc.): we currently use C#/.NET for our core platform and
Python for our data platform and are simplifying this stack as we scale.
• You understand what it means to operate in a regulated environment, and have
built secure, reliable, and cloud-native systems, ideally on Azure.
