Design and deliver cloudânative platforms for product intake, communication, and collaboration as part of an agile engineering organization.
Youâre a seasoned technical leader ready to own portfolioâscale challenges and elevate engineering excellenceâand we have an exceptional opportunity for you.
As a Lead Software Engineer - Java/React/AWS at JPMorganChase within the Chief Technology Office (CTO) â Engineering Services & Platforms (ESP) â Product Tooling engineering team, you will shape architecture and drive delivery across the firmâs stateâofâtheâart technology products in a secure, stable, and scalable way. Youâll set technical direction, lead complex initiatives endâtoâend, and mentor engineers across teams, ensuring consistent design standards, robust operational practices, and measurable business outcomes.
In this role, youâll join an agile engineering organization building and operating three firmwide platformsâFeature Request, Convey, and TechTubeâthat streamline product intake, customer communication, and knowledge sharing across the organization. Youâll take ownership of one or more product teams within this portfolio while influencing crossâplatform strategy, architectural decisions, and the full SDLC to deliver scalable, cloudânative capabilities that improve transparency, collaboration, and value delivery for product teams firmwide. Given the common technology stack, crossâteam contribution is expected, and youâll frequently lead initiatives spanning multiple products.
Job responsibilities
- Own portfolioâlevel architecture and technical strategy across one or more platforms (Feature Request, Convey, TechTube), ensuring secure, scalable, and resilient solutions across the SDLC.
- Lead complex technical initiativesâfrom discovery and design through delivery and operationsâestablishing engineering standards, reusable patterns, and reference implementations for crossâteam adoption.
- Partner with Product Owners and stakeholders to translate business goals into measurable technical outcomes, define roadmaps, and drive transparency through product metrics and KPIs; Champion agile practices including shared backlog ownership, crowdsourced prioritization, and communityâdriven product development, advocating for technical excellence and sustainable engineering; Mentor and grow engineers (junior through senior), conducting design reviews, code reviews, and handsâon guidance on best practices, system design, and implementation approaches.
- Design and implement complex, cloudânative software solutions with clear ownership of upstream/downstream integrations, including Jira integrations, notification workflows, serverless architectures, and API extensions.
- Write secure, highâquality, wellâdocumented code across multiple languages and frameworks (e.g., Java Spring Boot, React.js, GraphQL, Python) while modeling bestâinâclass engineering practices.
- Architect and build backend services, GraphQL APIs, and modern React UIs; ensure thoughtful API design (GraphQL and REST) and robust clientâserver contracts.
- Set and enforce nonâfunctional standards (security, performance, availability, observability, cost efficiency), including SLOs/SLAs, error budgets, and automated quality gates in CI/CD.
- Evaluate and introduce new technologies, tools, and approaches to improve developer experience, platform quality, and delivery velocity; lead proofs of concept and guide adoption; Promote secureâbyâdesign and privacyâaware patterns, threat modeling, and proactive risk identification to meet firm standards and industry best practices.
Required qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Formal training or certification on software engineering concepts and 5+ years applied experience
- Proven expertise in distributed system design, application architecture, and technical leadership, including setting standards and leading crossâteam initiatives.
- Strong experience developing, debugging, and maintaining code in large enterprise environments using modern programming languages and database querying languages.
- Handsâon proficiency in Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, and Python, with a track record of designing and delivering robust APIs (GraphQL and REST).
- Deep experience across the full SDLC: architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operations, with an emphasis on secure, resilient, and observable systems; AWS and cloudânative architectures (e.g., ECS/Fargate, SNS, SQS, Lambda, API Gateway, S3), including multiâAZ/multiâregion resiliency design.
- Strong understanding of agile methodologies and practices such as CI/CD, application resiliency, and security; ability to drive continuous improvement in engineering workflows.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and guide architectural decisions that improve reliability, performance, and developer productivity.
- Advanced knowledge within one or more technical disciplines (e.g., cloud, AI/ML, mobile, data platforms) and the ability to apply that knowledge pragmatically in product contexts.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with experience aligning technical decisions to business outcomes and product strategy.
Preferred qualifications, capabilities, and skills
- Infrastructure as Code expertise using Terraform; ability to design, review, and implement cloud infrastructure with guardrails and modular patterns.
- Experience with relational and distributed databases (CockroachDB experience a plus), including data modeling, performance tuning, and operational considerations.
- Exposure to video streaming, content management, or media platforms (a plus), including performance and caching strategies.
- Strong background in observability and performance optimization (metrics, logging, tracing), and cost governance for cloud workloads.
