The post-holder will spend their time working as part of a wider research team to collect sputum samples as well as samples obtained from research bronchoscopies and lung tissue samples from COPD patients and controls. The post-holder will be involved in the processing of sputum and lung samples for bacterial culture, identification and quantitation. These samples will also need to be processed so that they can be used for cell culture studies. The post-holder will be involved at all stages of sample collection and processing and ensure all sample records are maintained. The post-holder will have experience in aseptic technique and cell culture. The post holder will have extensive experience in microbiology techniques as well as some of the following techniques; sputum processing, RNA extraction from cells and tissue, real-time PCR, protein extraction from cells and tissue. The post holder will also be involved in general laboratory maintenance.
Training will be given in laboratory techniques where needed. Due to dependence of the work on patient samples, working hours may be spread across a 7 day week. We are looking for a candidate with laboratory experience. A confident team player is needed to interact with clinical and non-clinical staff in a multidisciplinary team environment.
