The successful applicant will join the Core Programming team, which handles a wide variety of full-stack full-lifecycle projects. As examples, our software underpins the ongoing success of UK Biobank (www.ukbiobank.ac.uk) and contributed to the widespread adoption of statins to combat heart disease. The team works on both Windows and Linux, developing primarily in C++, JavaScript and SQL. Team members are involved with analysis and design; negotiating with users and suppliers; implementing, maintaining and supporting our software; whatever is required to succeed. Management style is light, and team members have a high degree of autonomy being expected to think proactively and holistically about requirements, exercise initiative and assume responsibility for success. Flexible/hybrid working is supported subject to the demands of particular tasks.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Design and implement client, web and server-side programs and systems.
Pro-actively identify tasks and workflows for which programs are needed.
Liaise with administrative, scientific and other staff to ascertain requirements for programs and systems.
Provide expert advice on programming, methodology and UI design to staff across the department.
Act as technical lead on a range of critical projects, integrating the work of other programmers and developing novel solutions as required.
Maintain and support software, users and tera-scale data.
Develop specification, documentation and testing materials.
Carry out other related tasks as required by supervisor/manager
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential Experience and Knowledge:
Strong expertise in writing complete systems in C++ (or similar).
A good degree, a recognised computing qualification or equivalent experience.
Comfortable working independently and as part of a small team.
Aptitude for investigating and understanding requirements holistically.
Excellent written, verbal and virtual communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with staff at different levels of computing expertise.
Mature and reliable attitude, able to negotiate targets and manage delivery to them.
Desirable Experience and Knowledge:
Familiarity with SQL, Javascript/jQuery, python, HTML and CSS.
