Job Description:

This role involves assisting with the Engineering Teams at BAE Systems Land UK in the design and development of new processes and the improvement of existing processes. You will support new technology development projects for future products and processes, support product and process development, and manufacturing operations in small, medium and high-volume environments. Working as part of the Engineering organisation, you will ensure that our products and processes meet stringent quality and performance requirements.

Core Duties:

  • Lead design and development activities on a new energetic materials synthesis production capability within the UK market
  • Maintain and continuously improve a small-scale/pilot scale processing and research capability
  • Interact with products and processes throughout development to understand the challenges presented by energetic materials in process. Developing strategies to overcome these challenges and implementing them to benefit the business
  • Work within a cross functional team to develop and organise trial work – undertake research, develop material expertise and carry out synthesis and qualification of product and ensure all processing and development activities are carried out safely and in accordance with business processes and in compliance with legislation
  • Conduct analytical research using a methodical and academic approach, and work closely with academia in a lab environment

Essential Skills:

  • You will have a recognised Chemical Engineering / Chemistry Degree (or related qualification), to a minimum Bachelors level or equivalent
  • You will understand National and International Standards for complex Chemical Processes and experience designing and developing chemical processes as well as the ability to operate lab equipment, prepare trials and assure robust quality assurance
  • You will have experience in writing risk assessments and compiling stringent safety documentation
  • You will have the ability to work within, and directly manage, a close-knit team as well as independently, planning and managing own workload to safely deliver project objectives
  • You will have experience in working with hazardous chemicals and synthesis processes

The Technology Delivery team:

The Technology Delivery team is developing synthesis processes for manufacture of energetic materials within the UK market, and this role will form a fundamental component of the design and development of this production capability.
