About us

At Arbor, we’re on a mission to transform the way schools work for the better.

We believe in a future of work in schools where being challenged doesn’t mean being burnt out and overworked. Where data guides progress without overwhelming staff. And where everyone working in a school is reminded why they got into education every day.

Our MIS and school management tools are already making a difference in over 7,000 schools and trusts. Giving time and power back to staff, turning data into clear, actionable insights, and supporting happier working days.

At the heart of our brand is a recognition that the challenges schools face today aren’t just about efficiency, outputs and productivity - but about creating happier working lives for the people who drive education everyday: the staff. We want to make schools more joyful places to work, as well as learn.

About the role

We are looking for an experienced and proactive Senior Quality Engineer to join our Engineering team and help us leverage automation to drive quality outcomes across multiple product engineering teams, shaping how we manage risk, embed shift-left practices and sustain healthy automation at scale. The remit and focus of the role is to champion quality end-to-end from discovery through release, strengthening platform confidence and ensuring our products remain reliable, scalable and safe as the organisation grows. It’s a broad and exciting role, so we’re looking for someone up for a challenge - if you’re a collaborative and diligent candidate, this is the role for you.

Core responsibilities

  • Drive quality outcomes across multiple product engineering teams through automation, improving consistency of confidence, risk awareness and release decision-making.
  • Build and scale mobile automation for our two React Native apps, delivering a maintainable suite from scratch.
  • Define mobile quality signals and coverage across iOS and Android, prioritising high-risk user journeys and keeping regression lean and valuable.
  • Lead system-level risk thinking, shaping lean test strategies and ensuring mitigations are owned and implemented by teams.
  • Set clear quality standards and scalable validation patterns that teams can adopt to improve consistency and reduce gaps.
  • Scale shift-left practices across teams by influencing discovery and design for testability and raising the quality of earlier checks.
  • Own automation health for critical journeys across teams, improving reliability, reducing flake and strengthening long-term maintainability.
  • Curate and evolve cross-team regression coverage, keeping it risk-based, efficient and aligned to platform priorities.
  • Lead the response to critical quality risks and incidents, driving containment, shared learning and prevention of repeat issues.
  • Act as a multiplier for Quality Engineering capability by coaching QEs, raising technical judgement and driving  sustainable improvements.

Requirements

About you

  • Proven experience delivering and maintaining stable UI and API automation, ideally using Playwright with JavaScript.
  • Demonstrated success delivering and maintaining a mobile automation suite from scratch.
  • Experience testing mobile apps built with React Native and automating across iOS and Android, ideally using an AI-first approach.
  • Experience designing, evolving and setting standards for automation frameworks and patterns, with a focus on maintainability and reliability.
  • Experience working in complex, large-scale systems, with the ability to anticipate risk and drive quality outcomes across multiple teams.
  • Confident working with data and databases (e.g. MySQL), using queries to support debugging, investigations and test confidence.
  • Proven ability to lead epic and system-level risk assessment and define lean test strategies across layers (unit, component, API and end-to-end).
  • Comfortable operating with ambiguity, taking ownership of complex problems and landing high-impact improvements with minimal supervision.
  • Clear and credible communicator, able to align Engineering and Product on risk, quality expectations and confident release decisions.
  • Demonstrated leadership through collaboration and mentorship, raising capability in Mid-level and Associate Quality Engineers through coaching and feedback.
