Primary Purpose:
This position reports into the Utility Communication (UComm) Department and will provide technical support for the delivery and maintenance of IT solutions related to the Cyber, Fiber Optics, Firewall, Real Time Networks, SmartGrid, Transport (SONET/DWDM) and Wireless (RF) Communication technologies supporting Exelon.
Position will provide technical support of the engineering, deployment, integration and ongoing support of high available telecommunications technologies throughout the Exelon Companies. This position supports the migration away from legacy communications to implement secure IP based network infrastructure in electric and gas substations along with other remote field locations throughout Exelon in accordance with established strategy, architecture, and compliance programs such as NERC-CIP to enable application communication. This role will work in collaboration with the network team, their leadership, enterprise business partners, vendors and project/design teams, to deliver secure & reliable transport and IP networks throughout Exelon's large & complex enterprise and real time operational environments.
Note: This is a hybrid position (in-office with remote flexibility). Employees are required to be in office at least three days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday).
You must be able to commute within our service area in Oakbrook Terrace, IL to be considered. No relocation is available/offered.
Primary Duties:
- Assist engineering and operations personnel with technical and/or engineering support for deployment and operation of IT solutions related to the Cyber, Fiber Optics, Firewall, Real Time Networks, SmartGrid, Transport (SONET/DWDM) and Wireless (RF) Communication technologies supporting Exelon. 40% (40%)
- Support strong client relationships while working with the Utility business implementing various telecommunications technology projects and on-going maintenance of these technologies. Interfacing with vendor partners supporting the construction of these backhaul technologies. (20%)
- Identify and provide Business and IT data on IT trends and issues. Propose action items based on data trends discovered. Learn from IT architecture review and standards setting. (15%)
- Assist IT Architecture and Engineering community in planning the introduction of new technologies and/or identifying the most appropriate technology choices to accomplish goals based on the Management Model. Ensure appropriate implementation and optimization of resources aligned with approved standards and architecture to meet the Utility Smart Grid application requirements. (10%)
- Implement data protection requirements of business functions using the documented solutions and processes provided by more senior personnel. 5% (5%)
- Adhere to the established best practices, standards, procedures, guidelines and methodologies within the work area. (5%)
- Complete assignments on time adhering to all SLAs. Show technical leadership by taking responsibility for projects and assignments. Demonstrate company values, high ethical principles and personal integrity in everyday activities. (5%)
Job Scope:
- Develops technical knowledge and basic understanding of how utility telecommunications devices tie together to form a cohesive communications architecture including related networking technologies across Exelon.
- Supports Exelon policy, standards and governance while designing solutions or solving issues.
- Perform basic independent troubleshooting by looking through logs and can investigate and fix simple code issues.
- May require help to troubleshoot complex issues.
- Participates in small projects and can deliver project tasks under direct supervision.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science or related discipline and 0 to 2 years' relevant experience in telecommunication, electrical, computer engineering and related communication technologies or 1-3 equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Demonstrated ability to use technical resources and collaborate with colleagues across the IT organization to solve problems.
- Understanding of basic concept of TCP/IP network.
- Demonstrates an orientation and sensitivity to customer service.
- Ability to learn dependency management.
- Conduct activities and tasks with energy and persistence. Follows through to completion.
- Ability to seek and act on guidance, and direction from team members who are more experienced.
- Driver's license and access to a car to visit substations and remote field locations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Basic understanding of how the business works.
- General knowledge of security as it relates to data sets, passwords, and user IDs, including the basic concepts of confidentiality and integrity. Has basic knowledge of virus prevention, firewall protection and other data protection and privacy tools and concepts.
- Training and/or a solid understanding of the best practices required regarding processes, products, services and administration.
- Light experience or training accessing information to prepare simple reports.
- Demonstrates leadership with peers and as a member of a team.
- Demonstrates a basic knowledge of the core rules, regulations, instructions and guidelines as they apply to assignments. Understands which bodies regulate the industry.
- Light knowledge of the contract process within the corporation.
- Training, direct exposure, light experience, or experience dealing with capacity planning.
- Light experience, direct exposure, or experience working with disaster recovery activities.
- Received training and/or has a solid understanding of Engineering, Standards required regarding products, services and administration.
- Training, direct exposure, or experience in working with various real-time networks.
- Understand basic monitoring concepts and how tools are used to meet those requirements.
- Standards & Technical Writing: Develop, maintain, and enforce technical standards, specifications, and process documentation to ensure consistency, clarity, and compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Produce clear, well‑structured technical documentation (standards, procedures, job aids, and design documents) suitable for engineering, operations, and vendor audiences.
- Review and edit technical content authored by engineers, contractors, or vendors to ensure accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established writing and documentation standards.
- Collaborate with subject‑matter experts to translate complex technical concepts into usable, standardized documentation.
- GIS Spatial Systems Knowledge
- Demonstrated working knowledge of GIS systems and spatial data used to support infrastructure, network, or asset documentation and analysis.
- Ability to interpret, validate, and document GIS‑based information (e.g., asset locations, routes, or infrastructure layouts) to support engineering standards and technical deliverables.
