PROPOSED SALARY RANGE: £65,000 – £75,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.
Media Distribution Analytics is the team that knows what your streaming experience was while watching Wimbledon on iPlayer or listening to your favourite podcast on BBC Sounds. The BBC’s future is dependent on delivering content to an ever-growing online audience and setting the industry standard for a world-class on-demand and live streaming experience. That means playing content back flawlessly and offering the best quality media to our audience, so that we continue to deliver news, entertainment and the UK's most prestigious live events that delight our audiences.
To achieve these goals the Media Distribution Analytics team develop the data products and pipelines that ingest, measure and visualise the audience experience and allow us to take action, often in real-time, in addition to informing long term capacity requirements and performance. This is a data engineering team that processes enormous quantities of data, and works closely with device playback and the BBC’s own Content Distribution Network team (BIDI), as well as third party network suppliers, to help make the online streaming experience the best it can possibly be.

• Work with the engineering team and users to define the roadmap for our Distribution analytics data products
• To champion and be accountable for data quality and operational excellence across all the team's systems, from every-day situations to huge live events
• To build and manage relationships with internal stakeholders across architecture, operations and playback teams, keeping an ear to the ground and proactively seeking out new use cases and user requirements
• Collaborating with external stakeholders from public clouds and CDNs
ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:
• Experience of delivering large scale operational analytics data products
• Ability to work and lead in a technical domain, understanding streaming data pipelines and the challenges of building and managing them
• Experience of using statistical methods to understand and derive meaning from large data sets
• Prioritisation skills balancing cost and performance against new features and requirements for a platform
• Experience working with external vendors in the streaming media domain
DESIRABLE:
• Some hands-on experience delivering with batch or streaming data products using tools like Spark, Kafka, or Flink.
• Familiarity with cloud services (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure)
• Familiarity with using data querying tools, including SQL, to meet evolving user needs
• Experience using data visualisation tools (e.g Looker, Grafana, or PowerBI) to communicate insights from data to both technical and non-technical customers
