Responsibilities:
The Fuel Tax Accountant is responsible for the day-to-day activities related to fuel excise tax. The responsibilities include but are not limited to the following.
Job Responsibilities:
- Compile fuel data (gallons, FET and SET paid) for preparation of fuel excise tax claims.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly federal and state fuel excise tax claims for refund.
- Prepare monthly journal entries related to fuel excise tax credit accruals.
- Manage fuel excise tax exemption certificates for a few select locations.
- Review fuel vendor invoices as requested to ensure reasonableness of fuel usage.
- Analyze fuel invoices for large retail fuel vendors.
- Quarterly balance sheet reconciliations of fuel excise tax receivable and fuel adjuster accounts.
- Provide general ledger coding for fuel excise tax refund checks received.
- Compile data related fuel excise tax credit pass-through to customers.
- Facilitate federal and state fuel excise tax audits.
- Prepare fuel schedules related to year end financial audit.
- Communicate with fuel vendors as necessary to obtain information to file claims.
- Communicate with divisions to gather data related to preparing claims for refund.
- Maintain good working relationships with stakeholders, division management, peers, and financial and executive management.
- Special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:
Talent Requirements:
- A. or B.S. in accounting. CPA is a plus but not required.
- Three (3) to five (5)+ years of accounting experience with emphasis in fuel tax is a must.
- Ability to work as a member of a team and as an individual contributor.
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to juggle multiple fast-paced projects.
- Ability to meet general accounting and tax filing deadlines and willingness to work extended hours to ensure the deadlines are met.
- Ability to think outside the box and determine solutions to complex situations.
- Strong interpersonal relations and communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state excise tax credits available.
- Non-taxable use (fixed route and ADA paratransit services).
- Alternative fuel excise tax credits (LNG, LPG, and CNG).
- Fuel filing experience of tax forms (e.g., 8849) for refund claims and all supporting schedules is desired.
- Minimal travel (up to 5%).
- Experience in a multi-company environment.
- Computer skills include Microsoft Office applications (particularly Excel). Workday experience is a plus.
