The role

An exciting opportunity has become available for a fisheries biologist with experience of fisheries monitoring/fish counters and data analysis, to assist in the delivery of a number of fish monitoring projects across Wales. The position would allow an individual with good data management and analytical skills the opportunity to develop skills in specific fish counting techniques.

Responsibilities will include the following:

  • Co-ordinate and manage deployment of fish counter equipment at established monitoring sites.
  • Manage day to day operation and development of existing South East Environmental Assessment and Advice (SE EAAT) monitoring projects. The projects concerned will be the more technologically and logistically challenging ARIS/DIDSON installations.
  • Assist with the development of new fish counting and monitoring technologies.
  • Process fish counter data in a timely manner by applying various data processing techniques.
  • Carry out analysis of fisheries and environmental data to help SE EAAT meet project objectives, using various database applications, spreadsheets and statistical packages.
  • Undertake data interpretation and reporting, to provide good quality, timely data and information to support local and national planning and decision making.
  • Update and maintain quality assured information on relevant databases.
  • Assist with SE EAAT fisheries work programme.

About us

SE EAAT are a multifunctional team undertaking terrestrial and freshwater ecology, water quality and fishery surveys and investigations. Our work provides evidence that enables delivery of environmental outcomes to place whilst meeting statutory and national requirements.

The team uses the latest sonar techniques to monitor migratory salmonids and other fish species in rivers across Wales. Sonar techniques are also used to monitor key fish species in our lakes. Other applications include the use of infra-red counters and cameras at important fish passes.
