We have an incredible opportunity for a Principal Engineer to join our Technology function here at Checkatrade. We are on a mission to be the trusted foundation of every home. Making home improvements easy and hassle-free is a big part of that. You will be involved in defining our technical vision and strategy and contribute to the innovation and technological change of the business. We are Checkatrade. Are you? 

Location: Kings Cross, London or Lakeside, Portsmouth. Hybrid working applies, 3 days a week in office minimum. 

Where do you fit in? 

Fancy revolutionising the technical landscape at Checkatrade? We are on the search for a Principal Engineer to spearhead innovation across our teams. You’ll be at the forefront, identifying and championing technical initiatives, reporting directly into the Director of Product Engineering. With your expertise, you’ll define the roadmap, guiding engineers from different departments, and shape the future of our strategy with a forward-looking vision. As a vital member of our Engineering Leadership team, you’ll drive continuous improvement, setting and refining best practices with your influence extending beyond your domain as you mentor and inspire other engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and knowledge sharing. Your role will include active participation in company-level decision-making and directing cross-functional initiatives. Sound exciting? We know!

What do you need to succeed?  

  • Extensive experience in building large scale distributed systems. 
  • Extensive experience with the PERN stack (PostgreSQL, Express, React, and Node.js.) 
  • Experience taking a leading role in delivering multiple complex and innovative solutions 
  • Proven evangelism of professional software engineering practices and best practices for the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing and operations
