Ina Patrice, OneStream Developer at ManTech
Tell us a bit more about yourself/your journey into tech and how you ended up in your current role at ManTech.
I received my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics & Computer Science, with a Minor in Business Administration, in 2021 from Fordham University. After I graduated, I was on the hunt for a job where I could put what I learned to use.
I first landed a role at a Big Four consultancy doing IT audit, but after a bit I realized I wanted a role that had a bit more coding, where I could also use my business knowledge.
At that time, a friend suggested that a developer role at Definitive Logic could be a good fit for me. He spoke highly of the team, the collaborative environment and he shared that Definitive Logic was one of the top partners of OneStream and that the role was remote. So, I applied.
The interview process was a great experience, and I really clicked with everyone I met from the team. I got the job and joined the team in April 2022, and I've been here ever since!
Can you describe a typical day in your role as a OneStream Developer at ManTech?
I'm a level two OneStream Developer. Essentially, my job revolves around maintaining and updating the Programming, Planning, Budgeting, and Execution (PPBE) system for various government agencies. We do this using the OneStream financial management platform, which allows us to code and customize the software to fit our clients' needs.
A day in my life at work starts off with a scrum meeting each morning. We catch up as a team, discuss what we've worked on and completed, what our plan for the day is, and any potential challenges we might face. The bulk of our day is spent working through assigned tickets. These could be anything from enhancing the system, updating it for financial reporting, or even working on new development projects.
We also spend a lot of our time meeting with clients, discussing their goals, requirements and what they want to see in the system. Twice a week, the team gets together to share what we've been working on. It's a great way for everyone to stay updated on system changes and build team camaraderie.
We also do a lot of demos! If we've built something, we love showing it off to our clients.
How does your role contribute to the overall goals of ManTech and the digital transformation consulting team? I work on a team that's all about improving various back office operations and data management systems.
For my specific role, I work with a federal agency, particularly their PPBE system. This aligns perfectly with our team's mission where we focus on financial management, financial reporting, budgeting, performance, human capital management, and tech.
Essentially, we're dealing with questions like, "We have this number of people, where should we allocate them within our agency or other government entities?" I love that the work I do directly supports our team's goals. What's cool is that you can actually see a lot of the reporting we do because it's public information. You can find it on the agency website and see the reports we've created, which is always satisfying to see.
The demand for OneStream developers is high, but they are rare. What skills do you think are essential to excel in this role?
To become a OneStream developer, there are a few key things that you'd definitely find helpful. First, having some coding experience is super important. We work with C#, VB.NET, or SQL in OneStream, so being comfortable with any of these would be a big plus. Having a degree in computer science, engineering, or information systems could also be really beneficial.
In our day-to-day work, we often have to tackle problems and issues, so if you're someone who likes to solve puzzles and has good analytical skills, this role could be right up your alley! Plus, we do a lot of liaising with clients as well as internal discussions, so you'd need to be good at communicating, both in writing and verbally. It's all about expressing what you're struggling with or what help you might need.
Finally, I'd say you need good presentation skills. We often have to showcase our work, so being able to explain your technical work in a way that business folks can understand is really key. Hope this gives you a good sense of what's involved!
Can you share more about the culture within the Digital Transformation Division at ManTech and how it supports your professional growth?
ManTech's DTD department is all about learning, sharing and problem-solving. Everyone is super helpful, no ma er their level or team. Seriously, if you drop a message on Slack, someone is always willing to help you out.
In my specific department, we have a OneStream community, where I'm one of the admins. We've created a space where all OneStream developers at ManTech can connect.
We've got internal training, an email group, a Slack channel, and more. We also meet quarterly to share updates, tips, and tricks - it's a great way to learn from each other.
What I love about being part of this community is that I know I can always reach out to someone if I'm stuck. They'll help me find an answer. And it's not just about solving problems - we also focus on professional growth. My colleague and I recently launched a new initiative called the OneStream Study Groups. It's a space for ManTech folks to study for different OneStream certification exams. These certifications are a fantastic way to show off your OneStream knowledge and they even give your LinkedIn profile a boost!
ManTech is rewarding those who pass these certification exams with various incentives. I think it shows that ManTech is really receptive and supportive of ideas that help us grow professionally. We launched this last month, and I'm excited to see how it evolves.
