PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

We are looking for a Software (Test) Engineer with a passion for Quality, Automation (Infrastructure, Testing, Deployment) and Cloud Technologies, with good professional software testing methodology experience. The ideal candidate could have a significant impact in shaping our processes and direction in the BBC Images team.

When you join the BBC you join a culture of purpose and belonging – where your growth is priority, your identity is embraced and the work you do matters.  Your work will have a direct impact on our millions of audience users across the globe.
At BBC Images we manage a digital asset management system for image resources. We provide a pan-BBC service, managed as a product delivering long-term benefit to BBC audiences, adhering to our strategic goals as well as delivering significant value for money.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM
Within the Images team at the BBC you will get the opportunity to work on some interesting projects, using a range of modern technologies and practices. You have a level of autonomy that allows you to collaborate on a piece of work truly end-to-end; from planning and design, implementation, release and maintenance.

  • You will see a direct audience impact from the work that we do, which is something that our engineers take great satisfaction in.
  • We are a team that likes to work collaboratively, often through pairing. We like practices such as Agile, Test-Driven Development and Continuous Deployment but, more importantly, we like continuous improvement - we embrace change.
  • You will join an established team in the BBC based in our impressive Glasgow office on the banks of the Clyde. We are hybrid working from home and office (minimum of 1 day per week in office).

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT
At the BBC we are passionate about supporting you to be the best Engineer that you can be. We understand that it might take you some time to get up to speed and learn our business and technical domain, and team processes. You will join a team who are keen on collaboration and will guide you over the first weeks and months as you settle into the role. You will be working in a cross-discipline team, collaborating with the Engineering Manager, Product Manager, Delivery Manager, Architect, BA/UX and Engineers to deliver robust, quality software.

Over you first year, your focus and responsibilities will grow and develop. In the first 3 months you will be:

•    Getting up to speed with our products and testing frameworks.
•    Collaborating on ticketed work, taking part in planning, refinement sessions and retrospectives.
At 3-6 months you will be:

•    Picking up in-hours production support issues.
•    Mentoring and supporting our team of developers.
Beyond these responsibilities you will have time to focus on self-development, through Innovation Time (10%) and extensive training opportunities (via the BBC Academy).
