Role Summary
The Technical Product Owner is responsible for owning the roadmap, and the successful
delivery of the core giffgaff mobile platform. This platform, delivered as a suite of internal
microservices and APIs, enables critical business functions, including member acquisition,
provisioning, real-time rating, charging, and reporting via our event driven architecture.
This is a functional and strategic role focused on building and maintaining a platform that
enables the member-facing product teams to have the flexibility on propositions, working
alongside our mobile subject matter experts and business product managers, understanding
and contributing to future needs and initiatives, ensuring clear product backlog items for the
internal development team.
Success is measured by the platform’s ability to reliably and efficiently support business
growth, with a strong focus on the integrity of real-time Charging and Rating systems and the
end to end processes that utilise our platform so that giffgaff can provide a mobile service to
our members.
The role requires deep engagement with cross-functional stakeholders, a team of Mobile
Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), and key 3rd-party vendors, particularly the outsourced Online
Charging System (OCS) provider.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Delivery
1. Serve as the story lead for the mobile platform team, gathering, analysing, and
documenting needs from business, commercial, finance, and operational teams across
the business.
2. Prioritise platform capabilities based on maximum business value, regulatory needs, and
operational stability, ensuring that the platform's features enable wider giffgaff product
launches.
3. Act as the primary product liaison between the internal development team and their
consumers (other business product teams and 3rd parties), clearly communicating
platform capabilities and timelines.
4. Own the product strategy for the Mobile Platform, ensuring that the platform aligns with
current and future business and compliance needs.
Product Delivery & Execution
1. Translate high-level business goals into detailed, unambiguous user stories, Epics, and
functional specifications for the internal microservices team, ensuring all requirements
are testable and measurable.
2. Own the backlog for platform iterations, ensuring a continuous flow of well-defined work,
with a rigorous focus on end-to-end service quality, high availability, and stability across
the entire member transaction lifecycle.
3. Oversee the successful integration and delivery of platform features, acting as the final
decision-maker on requirement interpretation and solution acceptance criteria.
4. Define and track key Platform Performance Indicators (KPIs) such as service uptime,
end-to-end provisioning success rates, transaction integrity, and Total Cost of Ownership
(TCO), defining new metrics to clearly articulate team performance.
Operational Excellence
giffgaff has an established team that is high performing and trusted, maintaining that is a key
factor in the success of the team's outcomes.
1. Work with the team to develop and maintain functional documentation of the platform's
capabilities, internal APIs, and the business logic applied to charging and rating.
2. Ensure comprehensive monitoring and alerting is in place to allow proactive management
of service performance and stability.
3. Lead platform incident reviews, focusing on the business impact of outages or charging
discrepancies, and driving process or functional improvements derived from operational issues.
Required Skills and Experience
● Minimum of 4 years of product owner or business analysis related experience, with 2+
years focused on telecommunications platforms, MVNO/MNO BSS systems, or other
high-transaction volume environments.
● Previous experience working with agile delivery squads with the technical knowledge and
ability to take an active role in technical conversations and architectural decisions
● Functional knowledge of mobile rating and charging end-to-end service flows, covering
provisioning, usage processing, session control, and the financial impact of charging
systems.
● Demonstrated ability to excel in a role that requires translating complex business needs
into clear, structured, and prioritised technical requirements.
● Exceptional communication, documentation, and stakeholder management skills, capable
of influencing senior non-technical and commercial audiences.
Desirable Skills
● This is not a technical hands on role, but a thorough understanding of technology and
the high level building blocks required to run a light MVNO are desirable
● Functional understanding of event streaming or message queueing technologies (e.g.,
Kafka) from a data consumption perspective.
● Financial acumen related to platform costs, capacity planning, and ROI calculations for
infrastructure investment.
● Competence with Jira, Confluence & LucidChart
● Experience with regulatory requirements (e.g. SOX, PSD2, GDPR, lawful intercept) as they
apply to mobile platform data.
● Understanding of Mobile terminology such as MSISDN, VoLTE, 5GNSA etc.
