1. Job Title: Junior Data Engineer

5. Job Purpose
The post holder will:
- Build and hone skills in developing data pipelines to facilitate the Bupa Enterprise Data Platform
and the Data Analytics Cloud Platform.
- Participate on a wide range of initiatives to transform the data and information landscape at Bupa.
- Proactively engage and learn the activities that are conducted as part of the Data Warehouse
Engineering arm of the Data Team.
- Enforce departmental operation procedures, applicable security practices, production policies and
support needs to ensure that the quality of service provided meets customer requirements.
6. Accountabilities and Activities
- Responsibility for designing T/SQL routines that adhere to an enterprise data & information
architecture.
- Creating data pipelines from scratch (with assistance) along the entire data chain: implementing
data load patterns, error-handling, automated MDM procedures, data to hardware optimisation,
etc.
- Takes ownership for resolving all data and information queries through to the source for our
customers.
- Review personal workloads and analyse requirements. Facilitate the development of effective BI
requirements through a solid understanding of modern Enterprise Data Platform (EDP),
techniques, and best practices.
- Maintaining team documentation.
- Evaluating data quality, consistency, and adherence to standards.
- Aide the construction of the Enterprise Data Platform requirements through a solid understanding
of modern EDW tools, techniques, and best practices.
- Enforce departmental operation procedures, applicable security practices, production policies and
support need to ensure that the quality of service provided meets customer requirements.
- Provide functional and technical guidance where required.
- Develop and update system/solution/process documentation associated with the data model
solution delivery.
- Work with colleagues to develop the IT strategy and supporting architecture.
- Ensure solutions designs are aligned with appropriate policies, rules, standards.
- Maintain the big picture perspective in the implementation of individual Data Engineering
components.
- Proactively identify and manage risks and issues.
- Perform technical checkpoints with technical lead to ensure adequate Quality Assurance.
- Challenge processes and behaviours to drive the adoption of lean processes. 
- Be enthusiastic, proactive and support the strategic direction of BGUK Chief Data & Analytics
Office.

The postholder will be skilled to the following competencies and levels:
Application Support (ASUP-3)
Identifies and resolves issues with applications, following agreed procedures. Uses application
management software and tools to collect agreed performance statistics. Carries out agreed
applications maintenance tasks.
Testing (TEST-3)
Reviews requirements and specifications and defines test conditions. Designs test cases and test
scripts under own direction, mapping back to pre-determined criteria, recording and reporting outcomes.
Analyses and reports test activities and results. Identifies and reports issues and risks associated with
own work.
Release and Deployment (RELM-3)
Uses the tools and techniques for specific areas of release and deployment activities. Administers the
recording of activities, logging of results and documents technical activity undertaken. May carry out
early life support activities such as providing support advice to initial users.
Database Design (DBDS-3)
Develops appropriate physical database or data warehouse design elements, within set policies, to
meet business change or development project data requirements. Interprets installation standards to
meet project needs and produces database or data warehouse component specifications.
Incident Management (USUP-3)
Following agreed procedures, identifies, registers and categorises incidents. Gathers information to
enable incident resolution and promptly allocates incidents as appropriate. Maintains records and
advises relevant persons of actions taken.
Security Administration (SCAD-2)
Receives and responds to routine requests for security support. Maintains records and advises relevant
persons of actions taken. Assists in the investigation and resolution of issues relating to access controls
and security systems.
7. Qualifications, Training and Experience
- Experience within the context of enterprise data warehouse (EDW) analysis and design, with
partial knowledge of data warehouse methodologies and data pipelines.
- Experience with Microsoft SQL Server 2014 or later including developing stored procedure
based ETL/ELT, SQL Server Integration Services, proficiency with Visual Studio 2017 or later.
- Exposure to Hands-on knowledge of enterprise repository tools, data pipeline tools, data
mapping tools, and data profiling tools.
- Experience with business requirements analysis and database design.
- Moderate understanding of relational database structures, principles and practices.
- Exposure to Hands-on knowledge of enterprise repository tools, data modelling tools, data
mapping tools, and data profiling tools.
- Experience with business requirements analysis, entity relationship planning, database design
(both 3NF & Dimensional), reporting structures, etc.
- Moderate technical experience with the MS BI technology stack.
- Thorough and up to date understanding of IT development approaches, tools and techniques.
- Excellent client/user interaction skills to determine requirements.
- Experience with developing and maintaining technical documentation; process documentation.
- Strong communication skills essential.
- No minimum formal qualification level.
- Experience of using MS Office and MS project.
- Experience of a full project lifecycle.
- Manages own time and allocations, with enthusiasm, following the UKMU IT strategic direction.
- Resilience in an unpredictable environment where work levels can rapidly change.
- At least 2/3 years’ experience with SQL Server.
- Experience with the following applications is preferable:

o SQL Server Management Studio
o Visual Studio
o Team Foundation Services
o SQL Server Integration Services
o Redgate Toolbelt
o Azure Data Factory and Azure Synapse
o Snowflake 7.33.1 (version not exhaustive)

9. Dimensions
The postholder will work as part of a team of Data Team in either our Staines or Salford offices. The
postholder will work alongside Data Warehouse Data Administrators, Developers and Data Engineers
and under the direction/management of the Senior Data Warehouse Developer (ETL).
10. Environment
The postholder will work mainly in one of our offices and not be required to undertake heavy lifting or
manual work. Travel can be required to other office or customer/supplier sites should there be sufficient
business justification.
