We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of  Principal Engineer.

The Opportunity

The role holder’s primary responsibility is to be trusted partner with Business, accelerating AI adoption and the beacon of `Engineering Excellence’ across Finance IT. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for designing and delivering quality software efficiently (ideally, zero toil). The candidate will drive high standards across the department and be a role model exemplifying these standards. The candidate will be able to develop and communicate technical strategy and influence senior stakeholders in the delivery of IT solutions aligned to HSBC Technology’s strategic vision. 

This position plays an instrumental role in driving technical delivery and best in class design & code across a portfolio of agile teams in the Finance IT within Enterprise Technology. The ambition for Enterprise Technology is building an exceptional and trusted digital experience for colleagues & clients.  

There is a specific emphasis on Finance, AI and Regulatory Reporting to be developed and executed at scale. For this to be successful, pods will need to sustain a high degree of engineering discipline. The Principal Engineer is the key role that facilitates and enables this.  

In this role, you will:

This role demands someone with hands on engineering leadership. They will have a deep awareness of technology, best practices and emerging trends across the industry. They will be able to mobilise ideas safely within the controlled framework we operate in.  

• Hands on passionate technologist who is actively coding and can demonstrate their coding skills. 

• Experience of working with java or python. T-shaped engineer. 

• Has one or more for the following – blogs/podcasts about technology, has a GitHub portfolio and contributes to open source 

• Risk or Finance domain knowledge 

• Experience of designing and running highly available systems (ex. Trading Systems, Banking apps & services) 

• Ability of navigating production incidents and scientifically getting to the why’s of the incident and what can be done to improve. 

• Being comfortable working in an area where requirements, design and outcomes might be ambiguous 

• Ability to follow the industry shifts and offerings across the full-stack including AI, Containers, Kubernetes, Cloud, data lakes, storage and networking in Cloud environments. 

• A problem solver that can translate business opportunities into technical solutions 

• A broad capability of modern programming languages and the ability to choose the ‘right tool for the job’. 

• Build and lead communities that ‘raise the bar’ on delivering quality and efficiency 

• Build relationships with key stakeholders and technology partners 

• Be able to constructively challenge existing thinking and develop improved paths forward 

• Maintains a strong knowledge of IT development methodology, architecture design, engineering solutions, and technical standards. 

• Mentor and share knowledge with others on the team, and outside teams where required. 

• Always consider automation for a solution from the start.  Help to reduce the toil and time consuming portions of the technology to help developers become more agile and deliver solutions quickly and securely. 

• A continuous learner staying up-to-date and guiding the engineering community on evolving trends.
