This is a hybrid working role. Ideally, you will be based within a commutable distance of one of our CGI offices in Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, or Birmingham, but we will consider candidates from other UK locations. All applicants must hold National Security Vetting (NSV) to Security Check (SC) level as a minimum upon application to be considered for this role.
Your future duties and responsibilities
When you join our team as a Java Software Engineer, you will work on programmes that make a real difference to citizens’ lives across the UK.
Day-to-day, you will:
• Work within a collaborative team on the design and development of secure, high-quality Java-based systems.
• Write clean, efficient, and well-documented Java code, conduct unit testing, and follow established development practices.
• Ensure adherence to secure coding standards and industry best practices.
For more experienced engineers:
• Produce system designs, including specifications, prototypes/MVPs, recovery and restart procedures, and data flow documentation.
• Provide effort estimates and review the work of other developers.
• Undertake the complete technical design of smaller applications or components of larger Java-based systems using standard tools and templates.
• Define and implement user/system interfaces and translate designs into effective technical solutions.
• Contribute to the capture of functional and non-functional requirements.
• Support the development of coding and security standards, processes, and best practices.
• Assist in troubleshooting and resolving technical issues across the team.
Required qualifications to be successful in this role
• Strong programming skills in Java, with proven ability to design and build scalable, maintainable solutions.
• Knowledge of software architecture, system integration, and modern Java frameworks.
• Understanding and application of secure software development principles.
Tech Stack:
We’re particularly interested in experience with:
• Modern Java frameworks and tools (e.g. Spring, Spring Boot, Hibernate).
• Cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.
• Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Test automation frameworks and CI/CD pipelines.
Other requirements:
• A collaborative, solutions-focused mindset, adaptable to support teams across DevOps, testing, and delivery.
• Experience in Agile/Scrum environments.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• For senior candidates: experience in mentoring, coaching, and leading development teams.
