Job Title: Configuration Manager ( GG12 )
Role Purpose
The IT Configuration Manager is responsible for overseeing the configuration management and administration functions within the NSoIT(D) Core Product Team (CPT). This role ensures the integrity and consistency of IT systems and processes, facilitating continuous improvement and alignment with industry best practices. The IT Configuration will work closely with IT teams to develop and implement strategies that enhance operational efficiency, support organizational goals, and ensure compliance with standards. The ideal applicant will be comfortable in both structured and unstructured environments, seeing the bigger picture to deliver the following:
Key Accountabilities
- Develop and maintain the Configuration Management Plan (CMP).
- Develop and maintain the Configuration Management process, ensuring that all policy and process documentations is maintained under configuration management, reflecting industry best practice.
- Conducting regular reviews of the Configuration Management process including planning and managing improvements to Configuration Management plans, policies, procedures and management tools.
- Monitoring the effectiveness of Configuration Management utilising Key Performance Indicators and implementing recommendations for improvement as part of continual improvement activities.
- Driving efficiency and effectiveness of the Configuration Management Process against SLA/OLA targets and contractual requirements, ensuring consistent and high quality service to the customer.
- Work closely with all stakeholders to integrate and align Configuration Management processes, utilising appropriate communications and reporting to demonstrate performance and maintain contractual compliance.
- Manage process quality assurance through regular audits and quality checks, assuring compliance with all relevant standards, regulations and procedures.
- Maintain an accurate Configuration Management Database, utilising best practice and appropriate Configuration Management applications. Identifying and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Identify and document configuration items (CIs) and establish baselines, ensuring changes to CI’s are conducted in a controlled manner with full traceability throughout the lifecycle. Through a systematic change management process.
- Updating training, creating awareness and publicising new configuration management capabilities and procedures to stakeholders as well as advising / training / supporting colleagues in process adoption and performance.
- Identify, document, and manage configuration items (CIs) using standardized naming conventions.
- Conduct regular configuration audits and generate status reports.

- Collaboration and Coordination:
- Work closely with IT service management, development, and operations teams to ensure effective configuration management.
- Facilitate communication and coordination among stakeholders involved in configuration management.
- Provide training and support to staff on configuration management best practices.
- Tool Management:

- Evaluate, implement, and maintain tools for configuration management (e.g., ServiceNow, BMC Remedy).
- Ensure effective use of these tools across the organization.
Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field. ITIL certification or similar is preferred.
- Strong understanding of configuration management principles.
- Proficiency with configuration management tools (e.g., ServiceNow, BMC Remedy).
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Detail-oriented with a focus on accuracy and completeness.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in IT configuration management or a related field.
Experience of:
- Working within the public sector, preferably Defence, and ideally with Defence Digital (formerly ISS).
- Delivering accredited secure solutions within the UK Public Sector.
- Delivering in Agile (SAFE4) and Waterfall projects.
- Large Virtualisation infrastructure environments that operate at scale.
- Knowledge of The Atlassian toolset (JIRA and Confluence) to record and document work.
