We are looking for a Pentaho Developer to join our Sage HCM Localisation engineering team and support the generation, maintenance, and evolution of reporting systems across the Sage HCM ecosystem. This role is well suited to a developer with strong relational database skills, solid SQL experience, and hands-on exposure to ETL, reporting, and data integration tools. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, QA, product owners, and solution designers to ensure reporting outputs are reliable, performant, accurate, and aligned with customer, compliance, and localisation needs.
*** Please note: This is a hybrid role requiring 3 days per week in our Barcelona office ***
In this role you'll:
• Design, develop, and maintain reporting solutions using Pentaho Data Integration, Pentaho Report Designer, and related Pentaho tooling.
• Build and support ETL processes that extract, transform, validate, and load data from Sage HCM application databases and related data sources.
• Develop robust SQL queries, stored procedures, views, and data transformations to support operational, customer-facing, and internal reporting requirements.
• Maintain existing HCM reports, resolve defects, improve performance, and ensure reporting outputs remain accurate across product and compliance changes.
• Work with product owners and solution designers to translate payroll, HR, and localisation reporting requirements into clear technical solutions.
• Analyse data models, source tables, relationships, and business rules to identify the correct data flows and reporting logic.
• Investigate reporting issues, data discrepancies, and performance bottlenecks across databases, ETL jobs, and report definitions.
• Document data mappings, report logic, transformation rules, and technical decisions to support maintainability and knowledge sharing.
• Collaborate with backend developers, QA engineers, and support teams to deliver reliable reporting changes through standard engineering and release processes.
Required Skills and Experience:
• Extensive professional software development, database development, reporting, BI, or ETL experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with SQL, including complex queries, joins, aggregations, views, stored procedures, and query troubleshooting.
• Solid understanding of relational databases, particularly MySQL, including indexing, transactions, data modelling, referential integrity, and performance tuning.
• Practical experience building or maintaining ETL workflows, preferably using Pentaho Data Integration / Kettle.
• Experience creating, modifying, or supporting reports using Pentaho Report Designer or comparable enterprise reporting tools.
• Ability to analyse complex data structures and translate business requirements into reliable reporting logic.
• Good understanding of data quality, validation, reconciliation, and error handling within reporting and ETL processes.
• Experience working with Git-based workflows, issue tracking tools, release processes, and Agile delivery practices.
• Strong troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently on established systems and legacy reporting assets.
Nice to Have:
• Previous experience working with Payroll, HR, HCM, ERP, or compliance-heavy business domains.
• Familiarity with Sage HCM data structures, localisation requirements, or customer-facing reporting use cases.
• Experience with data warehousing concepts, dimensional modelling, star or snowflake schemas, OLAP, or reporting data marts.
• Exposure to scripting or automation using Java, JavaScript, Python, Bash, or similar languages.
• Experience with production observability, scheduled job monitoring, logging, alerting, or report execution diagnostics.
• Knowledge of AWS, cloud-hosted databases, or modernisation of legacy reporting platforms.
• Russian, Ukrainian, or Polish language skills would be beneficial, but are not essential.
Ways of Working
• Pragmatic and delivery-focused, able to balance new report development with maintenance, defect resolution, and technical improvement work.
• Able to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, especially when explaining data issues, reporting logic, or delivery risks.
• Proactive in documentation, knowledge sharing, peer reviews, and improving the maintainability of reporting assets over time.
• Strong problem-solving mindset, with the patience and curiosity required to work effectively in a complex, established HCM product ecosystem.
