Geospatial Advisor

The role

This is an exciting opportunity to help deliver Natural Resources Wales' (NRW) Geospatial Service, supporting colleagues across the organisation to make informed decisions that contribute to climate resilience, nature recovery and environmental protection. Using the ESRI ArcGIS Platform, you will work as part of a skilled and collaborative team supporting more than 150 teams and 2,000 users across NRW.

As a Geospatial Advisor, you will develop and support mobile, web and desktop GIS solutions, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcMap, while helping to maintain the quality and accessibility of NRW's geospatial data. Working with colleagues from a wide range of disciplines, you will use innovative geospatial technologies to deliver practical solutions to real environmental challenges across Wales.

As an organisation we support flexible working. You will be contracted to the nearest NRW office to your home and a suitable hybrid working pattern will be agreed on appointment. Any regular face to face meetings or training will be planned in advance.

About us

The Geospatial Services Team sits within the Knowledge and Information Management Group in NRW's Digital, Data and Technology Directorate. Reporting to the Geospatial Team Leader, you will join a supportive and knowledgeable team responsible for delivering vital geospatial systems, services and data that underpin NRW's work.

Working closely with colleagues across the organisation, you will help drive the effective use of geospatial technology to support better decision-making and positive environmental outcomes. This is an opportunity to contribute to meaningful work while developing your skills within a modern and forward-thinking digital team.

What you will do

• Undertake GIS development work including the creation of new web based and mobile GIS applications.
• Provide technical support and advice to Web GIS, Desktop GIS and Mobile GIS users across NRW including with Business Projects.
• Support specialists across NRW on best practices for the assessment, visualisation, technical specification and design of mapping solutions.
• Undertake data management work as required on NRW systems including with Drone, LiDAR and Imagery Data.
• Support the development of cartographic best practice within the Geospatial Team and across NRW.
• Undertake health and safety duties and responsibilities appropriate to the post

Your qualifications, experience, knowledge and skills

In your application and interview you will be asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience using the STAR method.

1. Excellent GIS skills and experience in developing GIS applications in a business context   E.g. desktop GIS; spatial tool developments; map browser, web services web feature services and mobile GIS, using the ESRI Platform.
2. In depth knowledge of desktop GIS, spatial databases and GIS browsers; including experience in developing browser based GIS solutions using the ESRI Platform.
3. Degree in a relevant subject or a good grounding in GIS or computer science.
4. Experience of providing user support for GIS browser and desktop applications or other IT, including an understanding of the ITIL framework or similar governance framework for application development and user support.

Additional Information

Successful applicants will be subject to a satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service Check (DBS) check. Appointments are normally made within 4 to 8 weeks of the closing date.

Natural Resources Wales is unable to offer visa sponsorship for this position. Although we hold a Skilled Worker visa sponsorship licence, it applies only to specific roles that meet both the eligibility criteria and salary requirements set out by the UK Government under the Skilled Worker visa route.
