How much do UK DevOps and Cloud roles pay?

The median is about £75,000, with most roles between £60,000 and £90,000. The number that actually moves your pay is your title, it swings by nearly £40,000 across this field.

RoleMedian pay
DevOps Leader£92,500
Platform Engineer£82,500
Observability Architect£80,000
Cloud Engineer£75,000
DevOps Engineer£75,000
Site Reliability Engineer£75,000
Infrastructure Engineer£67,500
Production Analyst£60,000
Systems Administrator£53,000
Archer's tip

If you're a Systems Administrator around £53k, the jump to Platform or Cloud Engineer is worth roughly £22,000 to £30,000 a year, and it builds straight on what you already do.

Which skills actually pay more?

Not every skill moves your salary the same way. Against the £75k median, the clearest signal is AI: roles that name it pay well above the rest, while the modern platform stack reads as the baseline now, not a bonus.

Platform stack (baseline)~£75k

Kubernetes, Terraform and AWS show up constantly, so having them is expected rather than a premium. Not having them costs you more than having them pays.

Archer's tip

The cheapest raise in this field is learning to apply AI to infrastructure work. It pays about £20k over the median, and only about 1 in 5 roles asks for it yet, so it's still an edge, not an expectation.

Which roles are companies hiring for?

Demand has consolidated around four titles. Platform Engineer leads, named in about half of all openings, followed by DevOps Engineer, Cloud Engineer and Site Reliability Engineer.

Archer's tip

The biggest, best-paid lane is Platform Engineering, and it draws fewer candidates per opening than its demand suggests. The quieter, equally well-paid one is DevSecOps, which rewards a security-plus-automation skill set most engineers don't have yet.

AWS, Azure or GCP, and is AI changing the job?

The UK cloud race is closer than most markets. AWS leads at 32% of postings, but Azure is a strong second at 25%, driven by the finance and public-sector employers that hire heavily here, with GCP at 17%.

AWS32%
Azure25%
GCP17%

AI is moving fast. Mentions of generative AI, LLMs, Copilot, machine learning or MLOps now appear in roughly 1 in 5 roles. It is still a minority requirement, but it is the fastest-growing one in the field, and it carries the biggest pay premium of any skill here.

Archer's tip

Go deep on AWS first, but don't ignore Azure in the UK, it's named in a quarter of roles. And since AI carries both the biggest pay premium and the lowest current adoption, early familiarity is a cheap edge.

Where are the jobs, and where do they pay most?

This is real hiring data from the companies on hackajob, and our client base is strong in finance, defence and enterprise. London leads by a distance on both volume and pay, the same as the wider market. A few other cities punch above their national weight here because big finance and defence employers hire heavily in them, Glasgow and Knutsford especially. Beyond London, the broad UK market's main hubs are Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol and Leeds.

CityMedian pay
London£99,000
Glasgow£92,500
Knutsford£75,000
Manchester£70,000
Birmingham£70,000
Edinburgh£67,500

Glasgow's high median comes from a handful of well-paying finance and engineering employers, so it is a strong target if those are the firms you want, a genuine opportunity most salary guides miss.

Archer's tip

London has the deepest pool by far. If you're open on location, the Scottish hubs and finance towns can pay close to London rates at a lower cost of living, especially with the larger employers.
