How much do US DevOps and Cloud roles pay?

The median is about $151,000, with most roles between $130,000 and $184,000. The number that actually moves your pay is your title, it swings by more than $100,000 across this field.

RoleMedian pay
DevOps Leader$213,000
Observability Architect$175,000
Platform Engineer$165,000
Cloud Engineer$160,000
DevOps Engineer$160,000
Site Reliability Engineer$159,000
Infrastructure Engineer$150,000
DevSecOps$150,000
Systems Administrator$109,000
Archer's tip

If you're a Systems Administrator around $109k, the jump to Platform or Cloud Engineer is worth roughly $50,000 a year, and it builds straight on what you already do.

Which skills actually pay more?

Not every skill moves your salary the same way. Against the $151k median, here's what stands out when employers name it in a posting.

AI and automation$167k
Kubernetes, Terraform$161k
AWS, Python, Docker$159k
Archer's tip

The cheapest raise in this field is learning to apply AI to infrastructure work. It pays about $16k over the median, and about 1 in 4 roles asks for it, so it's still an edge, not an expectation.

Which roles are companies hiring for?

Demand has consolidated around four titles. Platform Engineer leads, named in about half of all openings, followed by Cloud Engineer, DevOps Engineer and Site Reliability Engineer.

Archer's tip

The crowded, well-paid lane is Cloud and Platform engineering. The quieter, equally well-paid one is DevSecOps, which rewards a security-plus-automation skill set most engineers don't have yet.

AWS, Azure or GCP, and is AI changing the job?

The cloud race in US hiring is not close. AWS appears in 35.5% of postings, Azure in 18.5% and GCP in 11%, so AWS is named roughly twice as often as Azure and three times as often as GCP.

AWS35.5%
Azure18.5%
GCP11%

AI is moving fast. Mentions of generative AI, LLMs or Copilot have gone from under 2% of roles in 2024 to over 12% today, roughly a sevenfold rise in two years. It is still a minority requirement, but it is the fastest-growing one in the field.

Archer's tip

Go deep on AWS first, rather than spreading yourself thin across three clouds. And since AI carries both the biggest pay premium and the lowest current adoption, early familiarity is a cheap edge.

Where are the jobs, and where do they pay most?

This is real hiring data from the companies on hackajob, and our client base is strong in finance, defense and enterprise. That shapes the map in a useful way: alongside the big national tech centers, finance and operations hubs like Nashville, Jersey City and Columbus are major DevOps employers here. Across the wider market, the deepest talent pools sit in the San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, New York and Austin.

MetroMedian pay
Palo Alto$186,000
Jersey City$186,000
San Francisco$180,000
New York$180,000
Columbus$175,000
Seattle$175,000

Jersey City and Columbus pay near the top because the finance firms hiring there pay well for DevOps, a genuine opportunity most salary guides miss.

Archer's tip

The finance-hub cities pay close to Bay Area rates at a lower cost of living. For the widest choice of roles, the Bay Area, Seattle, New York and Austin have the deepest markets.
