Head of Data Engineering

1.2 Role Summary  

The Head of Data Engineering is Envitia’s senior commercial and delivery lead for Data Engineering and Data Architecture services within major client programmes (notably Home Office Data and Analytics Services (DAS)).

This role is not a purely technical leadership position. It combines commercial ownership, senior stakeholder management, service mobilisation, and delivery assurance, underpinned by sufficient technical understanding to make informed decisions, challenge assumptions, and ensure credible delivery.

The post-holder acts as the primary interface between Envitia, the client, and prime contractor (Capgemini), ensuring Envitia’s services are mobilised effectively, governed appropriately, and delivered to time, cost, and quality.

1.3 Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities

Commercial & Client Leadership

·        Acts as Envitia’s senior delivery and commercial lead for Data Engineering and Data Architecture services under major framework and programme contracts (e.g. HO DAS).

·        Serves as the primary point of engagement with client stakeholders and prime contractors, managing expectations and ensuring contractual commitments are met.

·        Works with clients and primes to shape new work, carrying out rapid impact analysis, feasibility assessments, and SoW-based cost estimates.

·        Identifies opportunities to grow Envitia’s footprint by demonstrating delivery excellence, proactive engagement, and trusted advisory capability.

Mobilisation & Transition

·        Leads the mobilisation and transition of Envitia services into complex enterprise delivery environments, including integration with prime‑operated orchestration layers.

·        Owns mobilisation objectives, milestones, success criteria, and readiness for service acceptance and go‑live.

·        Ensures continuity of live services during transition, including parallel running and controlled handover from incumbent suppliers.

Delivery Oversight & Governance

·        Maintains oversight of delivery performance across Envitia’s data engineering and architecture teams, ensuring commitments remain on track.

·        Establishes and enforces governance structures, decision‑making cadence, and escalation routes.

·        Ensures delivery aligns with client standards for security, data governance, and operational assurance.

·        Provides senior assurance input into formal service acceptance and operational readiness.

Capability & Resourcing

·        Provides a forward‑looking view of demand, ensuring Envitia can scale data engineering and architecture capability in line with client priorities.

·        Works with internal leadership to align people, skills, and partners to delivery needs.

·        Acts as a visible senior leader, setting direction and expectations for data engineering delivery across Envitia.

1.4 Core Competencies

Essential

·        Senior leadership experience in data engineering or large‑scale data platform delivery within complex client environments.

·        Strong commercial acumen, including shaping work, estimating, and managing delivery against contractual commitments.

·        Proven ability to operate at programme or portfolio level, coordinating multiple teams and stakeholders.

·        Experience working with prime contractors and enterprise scale clients, navigating governance and assurance frameworks.

·        Sufficient technical depth to credibly engage on data platforms, pipelines, architectures, and delivery risks.

Desirable

·        Experience delivering services into UK central government or regulated environments.

·        Familiarity with enterprise data platforms, cloud ecosystems (AWS), and modern data engineering practices.

·        Experience leading mobilisation, transition, or service take‑on from incumbent suppliers.

1.5 Travel

The Home Office DAS environment operates across a number of Home Office sites across the UK with the main balance of activity being Lunar House, Croydon and Marsham Street, London. There are some offices further North. Work will be hybrid locations, however, this roles will require 60% onsite in London locations to interface with the DAS Technical Leadership Team and the Product Managers.
