We’re looking for a Cloud Operations Engineer to join our Cloud Operations team in Barcelona and help run reliable, secure, and cost-efficient production platforms across a multi-cloud, multi-region, geo-distributed environment. This is a hands-on, operationally focused role supporting SaaS services and infrastructure that must remain highly available and performant around the clock.
You’ll work closely with Engineering, Security, and Product teams to support day-to-day operations, drive automation, strengthen observability, and reduce cloud waste through disciplined resource management. If you enjoy working across modern cloud platforms with real production responsibility and a bias toward operational excellence, this role is a strong fit.
This role includes participation in a 24/7 on-call rota.
This is a hybrid role working 3 days a week in our Barcelona office.
First 90 Days
30 Days: Get to grips with Sage’s cloud estate: the AWS and Azure environments, Kubernetes workloads, observability tooling, and the operational processes that keep production running. Familiarise yourself with runbooks, incident procedures, and the teams you’ll partner with. Begin contributing to day-to-day operations and shadow the on-call rota before joining it.
60 Days: Take active ownership of operational tasks across your assigned areas. Handle infrastructure maintenance, Kubernetes workload support, and incident response with growing confidence. Begin contributing to Terraform-based infrastructure work and automation initiatives. Engage with Engineering and Security colleagues on ongoing improvements to observability and platform reliability.
90 Days: Operate independently across the full scope of the role: multi-cloud infrastructure, Kubernetes operations, IaC, scripting, monitoring, and incident response. Contribute meaningfully to cost efficiency initiatives, documentation, and the team’s continuous improvement agenda. Be a reliable, collaborative presence in a fast-paced global environment.
Meet the Team
You’ll join the Cloud Operations team – a hands-on engineering group responsible for the reliability, security, and performance of Sage’s production SaaS platforms across AWS and Azure. The team operates across multiple regions and geographies, with a strong culture of automation, operational discipline, and continuous improvement.
You’ll work alongside Cloud Operations colleagues and partner closely with Engineering, Security, and Product teams. The environment is fast-paced and production-focused – the kind of team that takes reliability seriously, values clear communication, and is always looking for ways to do things better.
How Success Will Be Measured
• Reliability and availability of the cloud infrastructure and services you support, measured against SLAs
• Speed and quality of incident response and service restoration
• Measurable reduction in cloud waste and improvement in cost efficiency across your areas
• Quality and coverage of operational documentation, runbooks, and support procedures
• Contribution to automation initiatives that reduce manual operational overhead
• Positive collaboration with Engineering, Security, and Product stakeholders
Qualifications
Essential
• 3+ years of experience in cloud operations, DevOps, SRE, systems engineering, or platform engineering
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS or Azure, and working familiarity with the other platform
• Good understanding of cloud networking: VPCs/VNets, WAN, VPN tunnels and gateways, load balancers
• Kubernetes experience across deployment, operations, troubleshooting, and cluster support
• Experience with compute, storage, and platform services across cloud environments
• Infrastructure as Code experience, preferably with Terraform
• Scripting proficiency in Python, Bash, or similar
• Experience with observability and monitoring tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic Stack, Zabbix, ADX, or Fabric
• A practical approach to cloud cost efficiency: eliminating waste, right-sizing resources, and promoting cost-aware operations
• Linux administration and troubleshooting experience
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, comfortable in a fast-paced global environment
Nice to Have
• Familiarity with Helm and Kubernetes release management
• Exposure to relational and non-relational databases
• Relevant cloud certifications: AWS SysOps Administrator, AWS Solutions Architect Associate, Azure Administrator Associate, or equivalent
